  7. London is looking to tap the deep pockets of Silicon Valley

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, traveled to California as part of a trade mission to try to convince Silicon Valley tech leaders to invest more money in the U.K. capital.

On Tuesday, Khan met with senior tech bosses including Google Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat, venture capital investors and entrepreneurs from the Bay Area.

The London mayor ultimately hopes to bolster what is already a strong relationship between London and Silicon Valley.

He specifically wants more U.S. tech firms to open more offices in London. He also wants more U.S. tech investors to back more London start-ups with more of their billions.

U.S. tech giants including Google, Meta, Amazon, Twitter and Apple already have large offices in the capital, while Silicon Valley venture capital heavyweights including Sequoia and Lightspeed Ventures have also set up outposts in the city recently to help them find start-up investment opportunities.

Ahead of his meetings, Khan said in a statement that he planned to “bang the drum for even more investment in London by American tech companies.”

  8. Airbnb just did its biggest redesign in a decade — here’s what’s new

    Airbnb categories
Airbnb is introducing a search function designed to make it easier for users to discover homes in locations they may not have thought to search for.

When a user opens the platform, they’ll be presented with 56 categories that organize homes based on their style, location or proximity to a travel activity. If a person searches for a particular place, the results are also organized by categories that are relevant to the destination.

Style categories range from “amazing views” to “earth homes.” Location categories include places such as national parks and vineyards, while activity categories include things like camping and golfing.

“Airbnb Categories organize homes by what makes them unique, which helps people discover places they wouldn’t have otherwise found. This can help alleviate over-tourism by redistributing travel to new locations beyond the same popular destinations,” the company said in a release.

Airbnb has found interest in these types of travel experiences. Nights booked in the first quarter of 2022 for summer travel to unique homes increased 80% compared to 2019, the company said.

  9. Google announces its first smartwatch, a new budget phone, and more
Google announced several new gadgets during its I/O developer conference on Wednesday, including its long-awaited Pixel Watch, a new budget Pixel 6a phone, and headphones. It also teased its flagship Pixel 7 phone, which is coming this fall, and said it’s working on a new tablet.

Hardware isn’t a key part of Google’s business, but that seems to be changing as it continues to launch new products. Google generated $61.24 billion in advertising revenue last quarter while its “other revenue” segment, which includes hardware sales, apps, and nonadvertising revenue, generated $8.16 billion. But that increased from $6.67 billion in the year-ago quarter, and CEO Sundar Pichai said the Pixel smartphone hit an all-time sales record despite supply constraints.

  11. SoftBank Vision Fund posts record $27 billion loss as tech stocks plummet

SoftBank’s Vision Fund posted a 3.5 trillion yen loss ($27.4 billion), the biggest loss since the investment fund began in 2017.
Global markets have been in turmoil as investors contest with rampant inflation and the U.S. Federal Reserve raising interest rates that have caused investors to flee high-growth tech stocks.
SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son said the company would be more “conservative when it comes to the pace of new investments” as it goes into a “defense” position.

  12. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai on inflation, investing in growth and free speech on the internet

“We definitely see uncertainty ahead, like everyone else,” Pichai told CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa in an interview on Wednesday at Google’s annual I/O conference in Mountain View, California. “The good thing is we’ve been around as a company for a while. [We] have worked through past moments like this, be it 2008 or the early days of the pandemic, and we take a long-term view.”

He also said he thought the economy would “take time to work through” the current high rate of inflation.

“What gives uncertainty is there are so many different factors, be it supply chain issues or be it rising energy prices,” Pichai said.

“I do think people are seeing the relief in certain sectors,” he suggested, pointing to travel as an example. “But then you have other new areas which are showing problems, maybe due to supply chain constraints. … Energy has been an issue, as an example. In some cases rentals have gone up, and food prices.”
